Yercaud sits at about 1,500 metres in the Shevaroy Hills of the Eastern Ghats, in Salem district. The name is generally read as yeri (lake) and kadu (forest) in Tamil, and the lake in the middle of town is still the natural starting point for any visit. It is one of Tamil Nadu's smaller and calmer hill stations, with fewer crowds than Ooty or Kodaikanal and a more modest list of sights.
The town grew as a recreation retreat in the 19th century. Coffee planting began in the 1820s under Salem's collector M. D. Cockburn, and Thomas Munro, the Governor of Madras, is credited with popularising the plateau in 1842. That plantation history still shapes the landscape: shaded coffee estates, orange and pepper groves, a Botanical Survey of India garden with an orchidarium and the flower show of the May summer festival.
A visit works best as two easy days. Spend one around the lake, Anna Park and the gardens, and another on a loop of viewpoints and temples, including Pagoda Point and the cave shrine of Servarayan at the top of the range. The road up from Salem is steep with many hairpin bends, which is the one real challenge for older travellers or anyone prone to motion sickness.
Plan around the weather. December to February is the coolest and driest; the heavy rain falls from about August to October, when mist hides the views but the falls run full. Book ahead for the last week of May, when the summer festival fills the town.
