Area by area

Yogyakarta neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Malioboro and Tugu

Best for: First-time visitors who want to walk to the station, the market and the street

Good to know: The most convenient base, with food, shops and transport. It is noisy and crowded in the evening, so ask for a quieter room and lift access.

  2. 02

Around the Kraton and Taman Sari

Best for: Travellers who want heritage sights on foot

Good to know: Quieter lanes and guesthouses close to the palace and water castle. Pavements are uneven and some lanes are narrow, so check access.

  3. 03

    Prawirotaman

Best for: Travellers who want a guesthouse area with cafes, away from the main street

Good to know: South of the Kraton, with many small hotels. Check room access and ask your hotel for a driver for day trips.

  4. 04

    Kaliurang

Best for: Travellers who prefer cooler hill air and a quiet stay

Good to know: North of the city on the slopes of Mount Merapi, with the Ullen Sentalu museum. It is far from the city sights, so you will need a car, and Merapi activity advisories apply.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
