Plan 01

1 day in Yogyakarta

  1. 01

Day 1: Palace, water castle and Malioboro

Start at the Kraton in the morning, then go to Taman Sari. Have lunch, rest through the hottest hours, and walk Pasar Beringharjo and Jalan Malioboro in the late afternoon, ending at the Tugu monument.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
    Pasar Beringharjo1 to 1.5 hoursModerateMorning
Jalan Malioboro1 to 2 hoursEasyLate afternoon and evening

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Pasar Beringharjo: Level floors but narrow aisles, stairs between floors and little air movement. Better for those who can stand and walk for an hour; an escort helps in the crowds.

Plan 02

2 days in Yogyakarta

  1. 01

    Day 1: The royal city

Kraton and Taman Sari in the morning, Sonobudoyo Museum after lunch, and Malioboro and Beringharjo in the evening.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Sonobudoyo Museum1 to 1.5 hoursEasyAfternoon, or evening for wayang

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Borobudur

Leave early with a driver for Borobudur, walk the lower galleries before the heat, and return for a rest. Spend the evening gently, perhaps at Kotagede or a museum, if energy allows.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
BorobudurHalf a day plus 1 to 1.5 hours each wayDemandingEarly morning
    KotagedeHalf a dayModerateMorning

Pace: Borobudur involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Borobudur: Steep stone stairs with high steps and no handrails on parts of the climb, and strong sun on the open terraces. Older visitors should consider the grounds and lower galleries rather than the full ascent. Shade is scarce.

With parents at Kotagede: The lanes are mostly flat but narrow, with uneven surfaces and some steps at old gates. Shade and benches are limited; a becak or a car for part of the route helps.

Plan 03

3 days in Yogyakarta

Pacing

Pacing a Yogyakarta trip for parents and children

  • Heat and humidity are high all year, with daily highs around 30 to 31 degrees Celsius on the climate record. Plan sightseeing for mornings and rest after lunch.
  • Borobudur and Prambanan involve long open walks and steep stone steps. Go as far as is comfortable, and book a car with a driver who can wait nearby.
  • Pavements are uneven and shared with motorbikes. Use a becak or taxi for short distances between sights rather than walking in the heat.
  • Rain is heavy from November to March and stone steps get slippery. Wear shoes with grip and carry a light rain jacket.
  • Take travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation, and ask your hotel to identify the nearest large hospital before you need one.
  • Carry dry vegetarian snacks, as meals on day trips may not suit your diet. Drink bottled water and be careful with ice.
