Key hubs

Zanskar airport and railway station

Airport
Leh (IXL) is the usual air gateway; Kargil's airport is not a regular option. Padum itself has no scheduled flights, so plan a long road journey.
Railway station
None in Zanskar. Jammu Tawi (JAT) is the nearest railhead, about 750 km away by road according to Wikipedia.
Getting around
A private car and driver is essential; local taxis serve Padum and the nearby monasteries. NH301 links Padum with Kargil (about 235 to 240 km) over Pensi La.

How to reach Zanskar by train

There is no railway in Zanskar. The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi (JAT), about 750 km away by road, so most visitors fly to Leh or reach Kargil by road.

How to reach Zanskar by road

NH301 runs from Kargil to Padum, about 235 to 240 km, via the Suru valley and Pensi La, and is usually open from late spring to autumn. The Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road links Padum with Leh and Darcha in Himachal Pradesh.

Getting around Zanskar

A private car and driver is the practical choice. Local taxis serve Padum and the nearby monasteries, and distances are long on rough roads. Check road status, fuel and altitude advice before each day trip.

Easy transfers to and in Zanskar

  • Talk to a doctor about altitude before booking. Padum is at about 3,650 m, and the road crosses Pensi La at about 4,400 m, which is hard for many older travellers.
  • Plan at least a night of acclimatisation at Leh or Kargil before the drive, and keep your first day in Padum very light.
  • Choose Sani Monastery, Padum and the roadside views from Pensi La first. They are the most accessible sights. Karsha and Stongdey involve steep steps.
  • Travel with a trusted driver on the long, rough road, and break the journey with a night at Rangdum or a very early start from Kargil.
  • Carry regular medicines, a first-aid kit and enough cash. Medical facilities in Padum are basic and help is far away.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
