Why it matters

Why Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Talley Valley was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1995 and covers 337 sq km at elevations from 1,200 to 3,000 metres. It supports clouded leopard, Malayan giant squirrel and Asian palm civet, around 130 bird species in a 2015 spring survey, and endangered plants. It also has a bamboo species said to be unique to the area.

For visitors, it is a reminder that Ziro sits on the edge of a large and relatively intact forest. The orchid trail at Pange gives a short, easy introduction, and the wider sanctuary offers serious trekking for those with time and local support. It is a good contrast to the farmed valley floor.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat this as a day trip to Pange, about 15 km from Ziro, where a 1.5 km wild orchid conservation trail was opened in 2018. It shows around 70 orchid species that were relocated and preserved, and the forest around it is known for its butterflies. Ask your driver about road conditions, and start early, as the drive is slow.

If you are more adventurous, a local operator can arrange a longer trek into the sanctuary, which takes several days each way according to local accounts. Do not attempt this alone. The forest is dense, paths are narrow and weather changes fast.

Carry water, layers and rain gear. Spring and autumn are good for butterflies and flowers. Visit the Hapoli Forest Division office for current information on access and any fees.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
