Louvre Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi: History, highlights and visitor guide

Jean Nouvel's museum on Saadiyat Island, opened in 2017, shelters its galleries under a perforated 'floating' dome that scatters light like a palm canopy. It shows art from many cultures side by side.

Yes, if you enjoy museums or architecture, or have a morning to spare in air conditioning. Book timed tickets on the official site, allow two to three hours and go on a weekday to avoid crowds.

History and context

The story behind Louvre Abu Dhabi

Louvre Abu Dhabi opened on 8 November 2017 and to the public three days later. It was designed by Jean Nouvel, with engineering by BuroHappold, and is the largest art museum on the Arabian Peninsula, with about 24,000 square metres of space. Many works are loans from French museums.

Why it matters

Why Louvre Abu Dhabi is worth your time

Louvre Abu Dhabi was the first major museum in the Arabian Peninsula built to tell a universal story of art. It was created under an agreement between the UAE and France signed in 2007, which also allows the use of the Louvre name until 2047.

For Indian families, the interest lies in the way it places objects from different civilisations next to each other, so Islamic, Indian, European and African works are shown in conversation. The building itself is as important as the collection, which is why even a short visit is rewarding on a hot day.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The dome

Light falls through eight layers of stars to make moving patterns on the walkways and water below.

  2. 02

    Side-by-side galleries

Objects from different cultures are shown together by theme and period.

  3. 03

    The children's museum

A separate gallery with hands-on displays keeps younger children interested.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive at opening time and look at the building before you go in. The dome is made of 7,850 aluminium stars in eight layers, and the water around the galleries keeps the walkways cooler. Then follow the chronological route through the permanent galleries, which are arranged by theme and period rather than by region, so objects from different cultures appear side by side.

Do not try to see everything. Pick three or four galleries, take a break at the cafe, and finish with the children's museum if you have young ones. The museum's own audio guide is useful if you want background without a tour group.

The courtyard between galleries is the best place to rest. If it is not too hot, step outside to see the dome from the waterfront terrace and the sea.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book timed tickets on the official site
  • Pick three or four galleries instead of all
  • Take the quieter weekday morning
  • Carry a light layer for the cold air conditioning
