Area by area

Ambaji neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Near the temple (Khodiyar Chowk and Temple Road)

Best for: Pilgrims who want to walk to darshan

Good to know: Convenient for early darshan and the aarti, with a range of simple hotels and guesthouses. The trade-offs are noise and crowds, particularly at festivals. Check the lift situation and book well ahead for Navratri and Bhadarvi Poonam.

  2. 02

    Near the bus station

Best for: Travellers arriving by bus

Good to know: The bus station is under 1 km from the temple by a roofed walkway. Rooms are basic and rates vary sharply by season; book ahead for festival periods.

  3. 03

    Trust and dharamshala accommodation

Best for: Large groups and pilgrims on a tight budget

Good to know: Dharamshalas offer very basic rooms and are often full at peak times. Kumbhariyaji's dharamshala is reserved for Jain pilgrims. Contact the trust office to confirm availability and rules.

  4. 04

Heritage stay outside town (Balaram Palace, Chitrasani)

Best for: Quiet-seeking couples and older travellers with a car

Good to know: A Nawab-era palace hotel on the Balaram river roughly 50 km from Ambaji, with gardens and woodland. It is peaceful but not walking distance from anything.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
