The short answer

Arki Fort: what visitors should know first

Worth a morning if you like painted palaces and quiet hill towns. Go for the murals and the setting, not for a polished museum: access to rooms depends on the family and the caretakers, so confirm before you travel.

History and context

The story behind Arki Fort

Baghal state was founded in the 11th century by Rana Ajai Dev, a Panwar Rajput from Dhar. Arki became the capital in 1643 under Rana Sabha Chand, and Rana Prithvi Singh built the fort between 1695 and 1700. The Diwan-i-Khas dates from about 1830 and the frescoes from 1850, under Rana Kishan Singh, who was later given the title Raja.

The Gorkhas captured Arki in 1806, and General Amar Singh Thapa used it as his headquarters until 1815. Rana Jagat Singh, with British forces under Sir David Ochterlony, drove them out in the Gurkha War of 1815 to 1816. In 2010 part of the fort became a small heritage hotel.

Why it matters

Why Arki Fort is worth your time

Arki Fort is a rare chance to see Pahari mural painting in a palace setting rather than a gallery. The frescoes link Arki to the art of Basohli, Kangra and Rajput courts, and show that small hill states could commission work of real quality.

It also records the Baghal state's story, from its 11th-century foundation to the Gorkha occupation and the return of the ruling family in 1815. That a family still lives in and maintains part of the complex gives the place a continuity most ruined hill forts lack.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk up from the town to the fort and begin outside, looking at the stone walls and how the palace is set into the hill. Inside, a compact, two-storey palace is arranged around a central courtyard, with five main building blocks: public and private audience halls, a durbar hall, family quarters and service areas.

The highlight is the painted interior. The Diwan-i-Khas, the private audience hall, has carved wooden pillars and walls and ceilings covered in frescoes. The paintings, dated to 1850 under Raja Kishan Singh, show Krishna with the gopis, scenes from the Ramayana and lovers in the nayika tradition, with Basohli and Kangra influences. Ask whether the room is open and go in daylight.

Treat it as a lived-in heritage property, not a museum. Part is a family residence and part is a small hotel, so be quiet, ask before photographing and consider staying or having tea to support the upkeep. Combine the fort with Lutru Mahadev cave temple on the same morning.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask at the gate which rooms are open
  • Go in daylight for the murals
  • Ask before taking photographs
  • Consider a night at the heritage stay to support upkeep
