The short answer
Majathal Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Go if you are a birdwatcher or a keen walker and can manage an unpaved road and a steep walk. This is not a safari park: there are no organised drives, and facilities are minimal.

Why it matters
Why Majathal Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Majathal protects a rare patch of undisturbed forest in the Siwalik and lesser Himalayan foothills, where large numbers of the endangered cheer pheasant and many goral live. Because the sanctuary is small and little visited, it offers a quiet way to see hill wildlife without crowds.
It is also recognised as an Important Bird Area, which makes it useful to birdwatchers extending a trip from Arki or Shimla. Treat it as a rewarding but rough outing, and arrive with realistic expectations.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Cheer pheasant
The sanctuary holds an important population of this endangered Himalayan bird.
- 02
Goral
The steep slopes are home to goral, a goat-antelope.
- 03
Quiet forest
Few visitors reach it, so trails are calm.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Reach Kararaghat on the Shimla to Bilaspur highway, then take the unpaved road of about 10 km to Kashlog. From there, the final stretch is on foot from the foot of Kashlog. Check the road condition with locals, since it is unpaved and can be difficult after rain.
The sanctuary covers roughly 31 square kilometres of steep, forested terrain across Solan and part of Shimla districts. Walk slowly and quietly, early in the morning, scanning slopes for goral and listening for the cheer pheasant, which is the sanctuary's signature bird. The grey-crowned prinia has also been recorded.
Bring all food and water, tell someone your plan and leave before dusk. Winter is the recommended season, with clearer air and better visibility.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
