Arki is a small town in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh, at about 1,045 m in the Siwalik hills. It was the capital of Baghal state, founded in the 11th century by Rana Ajai Dev, and became the seat of the Baghal rulers in 1643. Its fort-palace, built between 1695 and 1700, still stands above the bazaar, and its interior carries frescoes painted in the mid-19th century.

The fort is the reason most visitors come. Part is a family home, part has been a small heritage hotel since 2010, and part is ruined. The Diwan-i-Khas, the private audience hall, has carved wooden pillars and walls covered in Pahari-style paintings of Krishna and the gopis, Ramayana episodes and lovers in the nayika tradition. A few kilometres away, the Lutru Mahadev cave temple adds a pilgrimage stop.

Arki also sits in Gorkha history. General Amar Singh Thapa used the town as his headquarters until 1815, and the ruined Malaun Fort, where he made his last stand, lies in the hills nearby. Majathal Wildlife Sanctuary, known for the cheer pheasant, is a longer outing for walkers and birdwatchers.

This is a quiet place with modest facilities. Treat it as a half-day or one-night stop from Shimla, Solan or Kasauli, ideally between March and June or in October and November.

What and where to eat in Arki.

Food to try in Arki

Food and restaurants

Food in Arki is simple and mostly vegetarian: dal, rice, rajma, parathas and tea at small dhabas around the bazaar. There are few sit-down restaurants, so eat when you can and carry snacks for the fort and temple. The heritage stay may offer meals to guests; ask in advance.

For a wider choice, eat in Solan or Shimla on the way in or out. Local specialities are not well documented for the town itself, so ask at your stay for the best nearby dhaba.

Shopping in Arki

Shopping

Arki is not a shopping destination. The bazaar sells everyday goods, and outside the temples you will find prasad and small offerings. For crafts, shawls and souvenirs, shop in Shimla or Solan instead, and treat Arki as a place to buy basics and tea.

Choose without overthinking

Which Arki experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Arki Fort or Malaun Fort?

Arki is a painted, partly lived-in palace that is easy to reach; Malaun is a ruined battlefield reached by a steep path. Choose Arki for art and ease, Malaun for Gorkha history and a trek.

Lutru Mahadev or the fort first?

Do the fort in the morning while it is quiet, and the cave temple after lunch. The cave is cool and low, which suits warm afternoons.

Stay at the fort or in Solan?

The fort stay gives atmosphere and early access to the murals; Solan offers more choice and services. Choose the fort for character, Solan for convenience.

Majathal or Malaun for a day trip?

Majathal suits birdwatchers who can handle a long, rough road; Malaun suits history walkers. Both are demanding and neither has facilities.
