Before you go

Arki with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit the fort in the morning; it is on a hill with steps and uneven floors.
  • The Lutru Mahadev cave is low and damp; ask a family member to check it first.
  • Malaun Fort and Majathal are demanding; skip them if mobility is limited.
  • Roads are winding; carry medicines for travel sickness.
  • Avoid July and August, when rain makes paths slippery.
  • Book the heritage stay or a hotel in Solan in advance.

Easiest first

Places in Arki sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (1)

  • Sair Fair, Arki (Culture and craft · Half a day) — The fair is in the town, mostly on level ground, but crowds, noise and heat can be tiring. Stay near the entrance and take breaks.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Arki Fort (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The fort sits on a hill above the town, with steep lanes, steps and uneven stone floors inside. Seating is limited. Older visitors can enjoy the exterior and courtyard and skip the upper rooms.
  • Lutru Mahadev Cave Temple (Places of worship · 45 to 60 minutes) — The approach road climbs steeply and the cave itself is low, damp and uneven. It is not ideal for those with mobility problems, balance issues or claustrophobia. Take a stick, wear grippy shoes and move slowly.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Majathal Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Full day) — The terrain is steep and rugged and the last approach is on foot from the foot of Kashlog. Not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Carry water, wear sturdy shoes and go with a driver or guide who knows the route.
  • Malaun Fort (Places to visit · Half a day including the drive) — The fort is reached by a narrow, steep stone path, with uneven ground and no handrails or seating. It is not suitable for anyone with weak knees, balance problems or heart conditions.

Practical tips for Arki

  • Weather. Winter nights are cold and July and August are wet. March to June and October to November are the comfortable months.
  • Getting around. Buses and taxis link Arki with Shimla, Solan and Dharampur. Hire a car for Lutru Mahadev, Malaun and Majathal.
  • Walking. The fort and cave have steps and uneven ground. Wear grippy shoes.
  • Access to the fort. The fort is privately held; no fixed schedule is published. Ask at the gate and respect the family's rules.
  • Photography. Ask before photographing the murals; flash can damage paintings.
  • Temples. Remove shoes and dress modestly at Lutru Mahadev.
  • Money. Carry cash for small shops and taxis; ATMs are in town but not everywhere.
  • Remote sights. Malaun and Majathal have no facilities or published permits. Carry food and water and tell someone your plan.
