Day 1: Central ruins and a sunset temple
Reach Ayutthaya early, by train or car from Bangkok, and begin at Wat Mahathat for the famous Buddha head in tree roots, then cross to Wat Ratchaburana to climb its prang if the heat allows. Move on to Wat Phra Si Sanphet and the huge seated Buddha at Viharn Phra Mongkhon Bophit. Have lunch near the island centre and rest. In the afternoon see the reclining Buddha at Wat Lokayasutharam or the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, and finish at Wat Chaiwatthanaram on the west bank in the late afternoon light before heading back.

With parents at Wat Mahathat: The paths are mostly flat but brick and grass are uneven, there is little seating and almost no shade. Seniors can see the Buddha head and the nearest courtyards in under half an hour and skip the far ruins.
With parents at Wat Ratchaburana: The ground is flat but the prang's steps and crypt access are steep and narrow. Seniors can enjoy the tower and platform from below and skip the climb.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Ayutthaya trip for parents and children
- Go to the ruins at opening time and stop by late morning. Midday heat on bare brick is the main difficulty, even in the cooler months.
- Hire a car with a driver or a tuk-tuk for the day, and agree the price and route first. Distances between sites are too long for walking.
- Wat Mahathat, Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Phra Si Sanphet involve uneven ground and some steps. Climbing the prang at Wat Ratchaburana is steep and optional.
- Carry water, a hat and sun protection. Shade is limited at several ruins, but museums and some halls are cooler.
- Take proper travel insurance. Ayutthaya has hospitals, but for complex care Bangkok has more choice.
- Dress to cover shoulders and knees at temples, and remove shoes where asked.
