Ayutthaya's best-known specialities are not vegetarian. Boat noodles (kuai tiao ruea) come in small bowls with meat or offal broth, and the town is also known for river prawns. The sweet most people take home is roti sai mai, thin roti wrapped around spun-sugar floss, a snack whose recipe is traditionally linked to Indian Muslim traders who brought it to the old kingdom. Check with the vendor about ingredients if you avoid egg or milk.

For vegetarian, Jain and vegan travellers the honest picture is that choice is limited and we could not confirm any pure vegetarian or Indian restaurant in Ayutthaya from a source we opened, so none of our listings here carries a diet tag, though Youta Jay Vegetarian Food is a daytime Thai jay (meat-free) kitchen worth confirming. Small vegetarian stalls and shops exist, and many Thai kitchens will cook vegetable dishes without meat, but fish sauce, shrimp paste and oyster sauce are common, so ask clearly and expect imperfect results. Garlic and onion are standard in Thai cooking, so strict Jain travellers should plan to bring food, rely on fruit and packaged snacks, or eat in Bangkok where Indian vegetarian restaurants are easier to find. Hotels may help with simple requests if told in advance.
