Area by area

Ayutthaya neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Island centre (near Naresuan Road and Soi 2)

Best for: Travellers who want to be close to the main ruins and cafés

Good to know: Guesthouses and small hotels cluster here, mostly simple. Good for early starts and cycling, but check for lifts and air-conditioning; many places are older and low-rise.

  2. 02

    Riverside and north island

Best for: Couples and families who prefer quiet and river views

Good to know: Quieter, with a few resort-style properties and restaurants on the water. You will usually need a tuk-tuk or car to reach the main ruins.

  3. 03

Near Ayutthaya railway station (east bank)

Best for: Train arrivals and one-night stops

Good to know: Convenient for arrival and departure, and cheaper than the island, but you need a short ferry or road crossing to reach the temples.

  4. 04

    Day trip from Bangkok

Best for: Older travellers who prefer a comfortable base and good hospitals

Good to know: Staying in Bangkok and using a private car or organised tour keeps medical access and food variety, at the cost of an early start and a long day.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
