Plan 01

1 day in Badami

  1. 01

Day 1: Caves, lake and Bhutanatha

Reach the cave temples soon after they open, before the sandstone heats up, and climb through Caves 1 to 4 at an easy pace. Walk down to the lake ghats and along to the Bhutanatha temples on the east shore. After lunch and a rest, visit the Archaeological Museum if it is open that day (check the weekly closure), then take the lake promenade at golden hour. If energy remains, the northern fort hill and Upper Shivalaya give the best view over the town.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Badami

  1. 01

Day 1: Caves, lake and museum

Spend the morning in the cave temples, starting with Cave 1 and working up to Cave 3, the largest, with its dated inscription. Rest at midday. In the afternoon, see the Archaeological Museum and walk the lake edge to the Bhutanatha group, ending with the light on the cliffs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Banashankari, Mahakuta and the fort hill

Drive to Banashankari at Cholachagudda early for its tank and lamp towers, then continue to Mahakuta, where a spring-fed pool sits among the temples. Return for lunch and a rest, then climb the northern fort hill to Upper Shivalaya late in the afternoon for the view back over the caves and lake.

Plan 03

3 days in Badami

  1. 01

Day 1: The caves and the lake

Do the four cave temples in the morning and the Archaeological Museum and Bhutanatha temples after a long midday break. Finish on the lake ghats.

    Day 2: Pattadakal and Aihole

Hire a car for the day. Visit Pattadakal first, about 23 km away, for the Virupaksha temple and the UNESCO-listed group beside the Malaprabha. Continue to Aihole, roughly 10 km on, to see Durga temple, Lad Khan and the Meguti hill temple. Lunch in Aihole or on the way back.

    Aihole2 to 3 hoursModerateMorning

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Aihole: Monuments are spread across the village and fields, with uneven ground and steps. A car between clusters helps. Shade and seating are limited.

  3. 03

Day 3: Banashankari, Mahakuta and the fort hill

Visit Banashankari and Mahakuta in the morning, rest, and climb to Upper Shivalaya in the late afternoon for the view over Agastya Lake and the caves.

Pacing

Pacing a Badami trip for parents and children

  • Start the caves at opening time; the climb from Cave 1 up to Cave 3 involves roughly 60 or more steps between levels, and the sandstone radiates heat by late morning.
  • Wear shoes with good grip. Rock surfaces and worn steps become slippery after rain, and the monuments have little shade.
  • The lake promenade, Archaeological Museum, Bhutanatha temples and Banashankari are the easiest sights; save the northern fort hill for travellers who are comfortable with a steep rocky climb.
  • Hire a car and driver for Mahakuta, Pattadakal and Aihole. Distances are modest, but the rural roads and sparse transport make a vehicle essential.
  • Carry water, a hat and a light umbrella; shade is limited at most sites, and eateries near the monuments are basic.
  • Rest through midday, and aim for one big sight in the morning and a gentler one in the late afternoon.
