Before you go

Bageshwar with elderly parents: what to know

  • Base in Kausani for more comfortable hotels and visit Bageshwar and Baijnath as a day trip.
  • Visit Bagnath early on a weekday; Shivratri and the Uttarayani fair bring very large crowds.
  • The valley is hot in May and June; plan temple visits for early morning.
  • The glacier treks are long and demanding; older parents can stay in town while others trek.
  • Avoid July and August, when landslides are common on Kumaon hill roads.
  • Carry medicines and keep a copy of prescriptions; specialist care is far away.

Easiest first

Places in Bageshwar sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (2)

  • Bagnath Temple, Bageshwar (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The temple is in town and can be reached by car to nearby lanes, followed by a short walk and some stone steps. Queues and crowds on festival days can be tiring; choose a quiet weekday morning if mobility is limited.
  • Kanda (Places to visit · Half a day, or one night in a village stay) — Kanda is reached by road and most of what there is to see is from the road or short village paths. It is a gentle outing, though village lanes can be steep in places.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Chandika Temple (Places of worship · About 1 hour including the short drive or walk) — The temple is above the town, so expect a short climb or steps from where vehicles stop. Older visitors with limited mobility should go by car as far as possible and take the steps slowly.
  • Gauri Udiyar Cave (Places of worship · 2 to 3 hours including the drive) — Expect uneven ground and possibly damp rock around the cave. The approach and conditions are not well documented, so older visitors should check with a local driver before setting out.
  • Uttarayani Fair (Culture and craft · A morning to a full day during the fair week) — The fair is crowded and noisy, with uneven ground on the riverbanks and long walks from where vehicles stop. Older visitors should go early in the morning with a companion and avoid the peak bathing day if crowds are a concern.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (3)

  • Kafni Glacier Trek (Places to visit · About 6 days on foot alone, or 2 extra days added to Pindari) — The Kafni valley is rougher and less used than the Pindari trail, with boulder sections near the glacier. Older travellers who are not trekkers should not attempt it; Bageshwar and the drive to Loharkhet are the gentler options.
  • Pindari Glacier Trek (Places to visit · About 6 days on foot, plus a day's drive each way from Kathgodam) — The trail is well used, but the days are long and the last stretch to Zero Point climbs to about 3,700 to 3,800 m. Older travellers who are not trekkers should not attempt it. They can stay in Bageshwar or Kausani, or drive to the roadhead for the views while others walk.
  • Sunderdhunga Glacier Trek (Places to visit · About 7 to 8 days from Bageshwar) — This is the hardest of the three glacier treks from Bageshwar: rocky, steep, with loose stones and possible snow. It should be left to experienced trekkers with a strong guide. Older family members can stay in Bageshwar or Kausani.

Practical tips for Bageshwar

  • Name confusion. Bageshwar in Uttarakhand is different from Bageshwar Dham in Madhya Pradesh. Check bookings and maps carefully.
  • Festivals. Rooms fill quickly during the Uttarayani fair in January and around Shivratri. Book early or avoid those dates.
  • Heat. Bageshwar sits in a valley at about 934 m and is hot in May and June. Visit temples early and rest in the afternoon.
  • Monsoon. July and August bring heavy rain and landslides on hill roads and trek routes. Avoid them for trekking.
  • Treks. Book the glacier treks through a registered operator or hire a local guide at Loharkhet or Khati, and confirm forest charges locally.
  • Money. Draw cash in Bageshwar before heading to Loharkhet or Khati, where there are no reliable ATMs.
  • Temples. Remove shoes, dress modestly and carry small change for offerings.
  • Health. Carry medicines and know where the district hospital is. Anyone trekking above 3,000 m should take medical advice first.
