Places to eat in Bandung, with what to order and how comfortable each is for families and older travellers.
Updated
Bandung food is Sundanese: fresh vegetables with sambal, fried tofu and tempeh, and a wide range of street snacks. Batagor and siomay, the best-known local snacks, are made with fish paste, so they are not vegetarian. Lotek, a cooked vegetable salad in peanut sauce, and tofu and tempeh dishes are widely sold and are the easiest vegetarian choices, but the sambal can contain shrimp paste, so ask before you eat.
For travellers from India who eat vegetarian, Jain or vegan food, Bandung needs care. Wikivoyage notes that vegetarian restaurants are uncommon. We verified three fully vegan restaurants (Hejo Eatery, KuangMing and a vegan buffet on Jalan Pajajaran) and one Indian fusion restaurant, Spice Affair, which also serves meat; we found no Jain restaurant, and other vegetarian places are listed without a diet tag, and Greens and Beans marks vegan dishes on a mixed menu. Say plainly that you eat no meat, fish or egg, ask your hotel to check the kitchen, and carry dry snacks on day trips to Lembang and Kawah Putih.
Menus and kitchens change. If you follow a strict diet or have an allergy, confirm with the restaurant before you order.
