Before you go
Bandung with elderly parents: what to know
- Bandung is cooler than Jakarta, with daily highs of about 28 to 30 degrees Celsius on the climate record, but rain is frequent. Carry a light rain jacket and plan outdoor sights for the morning.
- Weekend traffic from Jakarta is heavy on the main roads and to Lembang. Visit Lembang and Kawah Putih on weekdays if you can, and allow generous drive times.
- Tangkuban Perahu and Kawah Putih are high, cooler and windy. Carry a light layer, and note that Kawah Putih's sulphur fumes may bother people with breathing problems.
- Pavements in the city are uneven and shared with motorbikes. Use ride-hailing apps or a driver for short hops rather than walking in the heat.
- Take travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation. Wikivoyage advises medical evacuation cover; ask your hotel to identify the nearest large hospital.
- Drink bottled water, as Wikivoyage notes that tap water is not potable, and carry dry vegetarian snacks for day trips.

Practical tips for Bandung
- Weather. Daily highs are around 28 to 30 degrees Celsius. March and November are the wettest months on the climate record, so carry a rain jacket and keep indoor stops in reserve.
- Getting around. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek, and metered taxis, are common. For Lembang and Kawah Putih, agree a day rate with a driver in advance.
- Weekend traffic. Visitors from Jakarta crowd Bandung on weekends and holidays. Roads to Lembang and Ciwidey are slow then, so go on a weekday if you can.
- Money. Use Indonesian rupiah. Carry small notes for angkot, parking and snacks, and use ATMs at bank branches or malls.
- Dress. Dress modestly at mosques, with covered shoulders and knees, and carry a scarf. Cardigans help in Lembang and at Kawah Putih.
- Volcanoes and earthquakes. Tangkuban Perahu has erupted many times, most recently in 2019, and has closed to visitors during activity. The Lembang Fault is also active. Check official advisories before going.
- Water and health. Wikivoyage notes that tap water is not potable. Drink sealed bottled water and buy travel insurance with evacuation cover.
- Photography. Government buildings such as Gedung Sate can have rules on photography indoors. Follow staff instructions and ask before photographing people.
