Beed sits at about 515 m on the Deccan plateau, on the Bensura river, roughly 400 km from Mumbai. It is a working district headquarters rather than a resort, with a mixed Hindu and Muslim population and a history layered through Yadava, Tughluq, Bahmani, Nizam Shahi, Mughal and Nizam rule. Visitors come for a handful of old buildings in the town and for a few sights spread across the district.
In the town, the Kankaleshwar Temple is the sight to see: a star-shaped Shiva temple standing in the middle of a square water tank, reached by a causeway. The Jama Masjid, built in stone with ten domes in 1627, is the other landmark, and the eastern hills carry a Khandoba temple with two tall octagonal towers. About 6 km south of the city lies the Khajana well.
Out in the district are the Naigaon Peacock Sanctuary, about 20 km from Beed in Patoda taluka, and Dharur Fort, a Rashtrakuta-origin stronghold rebuilt in the 16th century in the west of the district. Parli Vaijnath, home of one of the twelve jyotirlingas, is a long drive away but the district's best-known pilgrimage.
Treat Beed as a quiet, car-based trip of two days. Facilities are basic, entry details are rarely published, and the plateau is hot from March to May. Older travellers will be comfortable at Kankaleshwar and the Jama Masjid, while Dharur and the sanctuary suit early starts and cooler months.
