Go for the view at the end of the day if you are already in Kasaragod. The fort is mostly ruined walls and bastions, so do not expect rooms or exhibits, and take a hat for the exposed top.

History and context

The story behind Chandragiri Fort

Wikipedia credits Shivappa Nayak with building the fort in the 17th century, after the Keladi Nayakas gained independence from Vijayanagara. Excavations have uncovered stone and iron cannonballs, iron tools and pottery.

The Chandragiri river historically marked the boundary between Tulunadu and Kolathunadu. The fort now lies in ruins.

Why it matters

Why Chandragiri Fort is worth your time

Chandragiri Fort is a quieter alternative to Bekal. Wikipedia credits Shivappa Nayak with building it in the 17th century, as part of a chain of defences after the Keladi Nayakas gained independence from the declining Vijayanagara Empire. It sits at the confluence of the sea and a river that historically marked the boundary between two ancient kingdoms, Tulunadu and Kolathunadu.

That border position helps explain why it matters. The fort is less restored than Bekal, which suits visitors who prefer a ruin and a view to a fully developed site. It is a good counterpoint to Bekal's scale.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Time the visit for late afternoon. The fort stands on a rise at the confluence of the Chandragiri river and the Arabian Sea, and the evening light over the water is the main reason to come. Walk the outer walls first to see the layout, then climb to the viewpoints.

Wikipedia describes a square plan of about seven acres, laterite walls, eight bastions with cannon holes, a trench on three sides and a tunnel visible at the north-eastern corner. It is now largely in ruins and is looked after by the Kerala State Department of Archaeology. Do not expect chambers or museums.

Take water and a hat, since there is little cover. The fort is only a short drive from the Kasaragod temples and mosque, so combine it with them on the same day. If you are staying at Bekal, plan the return before dark.
