Bekal is a small coastal town in Kasaragod district, the northernmost district of Kerala, about 14 km south of Kasaragod town and 12 km north of Kanhangad. Most people come for Bekal Fort, a 17th-century laterite fort that Wikipedia describes as the largest in Kerala, spread over roughly 40 acres with about three-quarters of its outline facing water. It was declared a special tourism zone in 1992 and is a protected monument.

The rest of the area is gentler than the Kerala of the postcards. Beaches such as Bekal and Kappil are broad and uncrowded compared with the south, the Valiyaparamba backwaters are quieter than Alappuzha's, and the district's temples, mosques and old Nayaka forts show a coast that has long mixed Malayalam, Tulu and Kannada influences. North Malabar is also the home of theyyam, the ritual dance-worship performed in village shrines from roughly October to May.

Bekal works well as a two- or three-night base rather than a one-day stop. The fort and beach take a morning, and the evening belongs to sunset on the sand. With more time you can add Ananthapura Lake Temple and Chandragiri Fort towards Kasaragod, Hosdurg Fort and Anandashram at Kanhangad, or a day on the backwaters at Valiyaparamba.

For older travellers it is an easy destination if you plan around heat and the rains. Distances are short, the main sights are close to the road, and the pace is slow. The main limits are the stairs and sun on the fort, thin public transport after dark, and the heavy June to September monsoon, when the sea is rough and many outdoor plans are better left for another season.

Bekal itinerary

One good day

1 day in Bekal

Reach Bekal Fort when it opens, so you climb the ramps and the observation tower before the sun is high. Give it about two hours, then walk to the adjacent beach for a slow break. After lunch and a rest, drive about 6 km to Kappil, where the backwaters meet the sea, and stay for the light at the end of the day. Ananthapura and the other Kasaragod sights are better kept for another day.

Two days

2 days in Bekal

Start at the fort in the morning, walk its ramparts and tower, then spend the late morning on the beach beside it. Rest through the afternoon. In the evening, drive to Kappil beach and, if you have the energy, the Kodi cliff viewpoint nearby for sunset.

What and where to eat in Bekal.

Food to try in Bekal

Food and restaurants

Food in Bekal is North Malabar coastal cooking: fish curry with rice, fried sardines, mackerel and kingfish, appam and stew, and the Malabar biryani and pathiri breads of the Muslim households in Kasaragod. Coconut is in almost everything. Vegetarian meals are easy to find, especially around the temples in the Kasaragod and Kumbla side, where Tulu and Kannada influences show in the menus.

The best way to eat here is to avoid hunting for a single famous address. Hotels and resorts serve reliable seafood meals, small family restaurants near Kanhangad and Kasaragod serve fresh-fish thalis at lunch, and tea stalls near the fort sell snacks and sweet tea. Ask for less spice if you are sensitive to heat, stick to bottled or filtered water, and be cautious with raw seafood or cut fruit in the monsoon months.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Bekal

Shopping

Shopping is modest. Small stalls near the fort and beach sell souvenirs and snacks, and Kasaragod town and Kanhangad have everyday markets. Check quality and prices on the spot, and bargain gently at beach stalls. For spices, tea and cashews, buy from established shops in Kanhangad or Kasaragod rather than from roadside sellers, and carry small notes because card use is limited at the smaller stalls.

Choose without overthinking

Which Bekal experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Bekal Fort or Chandragiri Fort, if you only have time for one?

Choose Bekal for the full fort experience: a large keyhole-shaped layout, a viewing tower and a beach beside it. Choose Chandragiri if you want a quieter ruin with a river-mouth view at sunset and you are already in Kasaragod.

Bekal Beach or Kappil Beach?

Bekal Beach is beside the fort, with a park and more visitors, so it is the easier stop. Kappil is a few kilometres south, where the backwaters meet the sea, and is calmer and more scenic for an evening if you have a car.

A day in Kasaragod or a day on the backwaters?

Pick the Kasaragod side for temples, the lake temple at Ananthapura and the old mosque. Pick Valiyaparamba for a slow cruise through calm waterways; it suits travellers who want rest rather than sights.

Stay near the fort or at Kanhangad?

Near the fort for atmosphere and walkable access to the beach. Kanhangad if you rely on trains, want more restaurants and shops or are visiting Hosdurg Fort and Anandashram.

Know before you go

Bekal travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat and humidity

Even the cool months are warm, and April and May are humid. Visit the fort in the first hours after it opens, drink water regularly and carry a hat.

  2. 02

    Monsoon

Between June and September the rain is heavy and the sea is rough. Beaches are unpleasant and some water-based services may be limited; plan other seasons for a leisure stay.

  3. 03

    Getting around

Plan on a hired car or a reliable taxi. Autos are fine for short trips, but ride-hailing coverage is limited and evening transport is thin. Arrange return rides in advance.

  4. 04

    Walking and steps

The fort has ramps, steps and uneven laterite, and the viewing tower has a narrow stair. Wear closed shoes with grip, and consider skipping the tower if mobility is limited.

  5. 05

    Temple and mosque dress

Dress modestly at temples and the mosque, with covered shoulders and knees. Shoes come off at the entrance, and photography rules vary, so ask before you take pictures.

  6. 06

    Money

Carry small notes for beach stalls, parking and entry tickets. Cards work at hotels and larger restaurants but not reliably at small stalls. Check ATM availability if you stay outside the town.

  7. 07

    Photography

The fort walls, tower and beach are good for photographs, with the best light early and late. Do not photograph people at temples, ashrams or theyyam ceremonies without permission.

  8. 08

    Theyyam season

Theyyam performances take place in village shrines from about October to May. They are community ritual events, so ask locally about timings, dress respectfully and keep a quiet distance.

Bekal with elderly parents: what to know

  • See Bekal Fort in the first hour after opening. The ramps are gradual but the open laterite holds heat, and there is little shade on the walls.
  • Choose a hotel near the fort or at Kappil with a car drop-off at the door. Evening taxis are limited once you leave the main road.
