Plan 01

1 day in Bekal

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, beach and sunset

Reach Bekal Fort when it opens, so you climb the ramps and the observation tower before the sun is high. Give it about two hours, then walk to the adjacent beach for a slow break. After lunch and a rest, drive about 6 km to Kappil, where the backwaters meet the sea, and stay for the light at the end of the day. Ananthapura and the other Kasaragod sights are better kept for another day.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Bekal FortAbout 2 hoursModerateEarly morning or late afternoon; November to February for comfortable weather

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Bekal Fort: The approach is a zigzag entrance and gradual ramps, and the walls are broad and mostly level. The tower stair is narrow and steep, there is little shade and seating is limited, so go early and carry water. Wheelchair users will find the grounds uneven laterite.

Start at the fort in the morning, walk its ramparts and tower, then spend the late morning on the beach beside it. Rest through the afternoon. In the evening, drive to Kappil beach and, if you have the energy, the Kodi cliff viewpoint nearby for sunset.

Day 3: Kanhangad and the backwaters

Go south to Kanhangad to see Hosdurg Fort and Anandashram, then continue to the Kottappuram terminal for a backwater cruise on the Valiyaparamba waterways. Keep the cruise to the cooler hours if you are travelling with parents. If you are keen on a hill trek instead, Ranipuram is a full day from Kanhangad and is best left for fit travellers in the drier months.

Pacing

Pacing a Bekal trip for parents and children

  • See Bekal Fort in the first hour after opening. The ramps are gradual but the open laterite holds heat, and there is little shade on the walls.
  • Choose a hotel near the fort or at Kappil with a car drop-off at the door. Evening taxis are limited once you leave the main road.
  • The tower at Bekal Fort involves steps and a narrow stair. Older travellers who prefer to avoid it can still walk the lower ramparts and the beach for a satisfying visit.
  • Plan the Kasaragod temples in the morning and keep the afternoon for rest. Temple floors are often bare stone and can be hot, so carry socks and a shawl for dress rules.
  • Travel between October and February if you can. April and May are humid, and the monsoon from June to September makes the shore unpleasant and some backwater services limited.
  • Hire a car for the whole day when covering Kasaragod or Kanhangad. Public transport exists but waiting times and walks to stops add up.
