Before you go

Bekal with elderly parents: what to know

  • See Bekal Fort in the first hour after opening. The ramps are gradual but the open laterite holds heat, and there is little shade on the walls.
  • Choose a hotel near the fort or at Kappil with a car drop-off at the door. Evening taxis are limited once you leave the main road.
  • The tower at Bekal Fort involves steps and a narrow stair. Older travellers who prefer to avoid it can still walk the lower ramparts and the beach for a satisfying visit.
  • Plan the Kasaragod temples in the morning and keep the afternoon for rest. Temple floors are often bare stone and can be hot, so carry socks and a shawl for dress rules.
  • Travel between October and February if you can. April and May are humid, and the monsoon from June to September makes the shore unpleasant and some backwater services limited.
  • Hire a car for the whole day when covering Kasaragod or Kanhangad. Public transport exists but waiting times and walks to stops add up.

Easiest first

Places in Bekal sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (6)

  • Anandashram (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The grounds are mostly level, with shaded paths and a meditation space, and benches are available in places. It suits older visitors well, as there is little climbing. Footwear comes off at prayer areas.
  • Ananthapura Lake Temple (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours, plus travel) — The temple sits in the middle of a tank and is reached by a path, with a mostly level walk. Floors are stone and can be hot, with little seating, and you must remove footwear. Carry socks if the surface is hot.
  • Bekal Beach (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The beach is flat and the walk is easy, with a tree-lined pathway along it, but the sand is soft and there is little shelter from the sun at midday. Come late in the afternoon, and note that seating and shade are limited.
  • Madhur Temple (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — The temple has a level compound with stone floors, steps at entrances and limited seating. Footwear is removed, so floors may be hot, and it is crowded on festival days.
  • Malik Dinar Mosque (Places of worship · About 45 minutes) — The grounds are flat, with steps at entrances and bare floors. Shade and seating are limited, and it can be crowded at Friday prayers and during the annual Uroos. Footwear is removed at the entrance.
  • Valiyaparamba Backwaters (Places to visit · 2 hours to a full day) — You sit on a boat for most of the trip, with little walking, but boarding can involve a gangplank or steps. Check boat stability, life jackets and shade, and avoid cruising in rough weather.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Bekal Fort (Places to visit · About 2 hours) — The approach is a zigzag entrance and gradual ramps, and the walls are broad and mostly level. The tower stair is narrow and steep, there is little shade and seating is limited, so go early and carry water. Wheelchair users will find the grounds uneven laterite.
  • Chandragiri Fort (Places to visit · About 1 hour) — Paths inside are uneven laterite with some steps and little shade, and benches are limited. It suits travellers who can handle a short walk on rough ground. The view is the reward, so wear sturdy shoes.
  • Hosdurg Fort (Places to visit · About 1 hour) — The site involves walking on laterite with some steps and little shade. There are few facilities, so go in cooler hours and carry water.
  • Kappil Beach and Kodi Cliff (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The beach is flat, but the trail to Kodi cliff crosses open laterite and coastal scrub, with an uneven climb at the end. Older travellers can enjoy the beach and boat rides and skip the cliff. There is little shade in the afternoon.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Ranipuram (Places to visit · Full day) — The trek begins with a forest walk of about two kilometres from Panathady before the open grasslands, which is demanding for older visitors. The roads are long and winding, and facilities are limited.

Practical tips for Bekal

  • Heat and humidity. Even the cool months are warm, and April and May are humid. Visit the fort in the first hours after it opens, drink water regularly and carry a hat.
  • Monsoon. Between June and September the rain is heavy and the sea is rough. Beaches are unpleasant and some water-based services may be limited; plan other seasons for a leisure stay.
  • Getting around. Plan on a hired car or a reliable taxi. Autos are fine for short trips, but ride-hailing coverage is limited and evening transport is thin. Arrange return rides in advance.
  • Walking and steps. The fort has ramps, steps and uneven laterite, and the viewing tower has a narrow stair. Wear closed shoes with grip, and consider skipping the tower if mobility is limited.
  • Temple and mosque dress. Dress modestly at temples and the mosque, with covered shoulders and knees. Shoes come off at the entrance, and photography rules vary, so ask before you take pictures.
  • Money. Carry small notes for beach stalls, parking and entry tickets. Cards work at hotels and larger restaurants but not reliably at small stalls. Check ATM availability if you stay outside the town.
  • Photography. The fort walls, tower and beach are good for photographs, with the best light early and late. Do not photograph people at temples, ashrams or theyyam ceremonies without permission.
  • Theyyam season. Theyyam performances take place in village shrines from about October to May. They are community ritual events, so ask locally about timings, dress respectfully and keep a quiet distance.
