Bekal and Pallikere (near the fort)
Best for: Travellers who want to walk to the fort and beach
Good to know: The most convenient base, with small hotels and resorts near the fort gate and beach. Evenings are quiet, with limited restaurants, so check the dinner options and vehicle access before booking.
- 02
Kappil and the backwater side
Best for: A resort-style stay with water views
Good to know: A few kilometres south of the fort, where the backwaters meet the sea. Resorts here are calm and spread out, which suits families and seniors, but you will need a car for anything outside the property.
- 03
Kanhangad
Best for: Train travellers and a town base with services
Good to know: A proper town with a main railway station, hospitals, shops and restaurants, about 10 km from the fort. Less atmosphere than the beach, but better for practicalities and for visiting Hosdurg Fort and Anandashram.
Sights in this area: Anandashram, Hosdurg Fort, Ranipuram, Valiyaparamba Backwaters
- 04
Kasaragod town
Best for: Temples, the mosque and the north side
Good to know: The district headquarters, handy for Ananthapura, Madhur and Malik Dinar sites and for road links to Mangaluru. Busier and less scenic than Bekal itself, but the better choice if your plan is temple-led.
Sights in this area: Bekal Fort, Chandragiri Fort, Madhur Temple, Malik Dinar Mosque

A large resort at Kappil, set between the backwaters and the sea, with Ayurveda spa facilities and houseboat-inspired architecture.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
