The short answer
Kappil Beach and Kodi Cliff: what visitors should know first
Worth an evening if you have a car. Kappil is calmer than the fort-side beach, best from October to March, and the cliff viewpoint is rougher walking, so choose the beach only if mobility is limited.

Why it matters
Why Kappil Beach and Kodi Cliff is worth your time
Kappil adds a different view of the coast. At the fort, the sea is the main subject. At Kappil, the sea and a river meet, so you see a quieter side of the coast, with sand dunes, still water and fishing boats. It gives the Bekal stay a second character.
The Kodi cliff adds an elevated view of the shoreline. In a district where much of the coast is flat, even a modest rise gives a good outlook, and sunset from there is one of the most-cited reasons to leave the fort area for an evening.

How to experience it
Go by car or taxi in the late afternoon. At Kappil, the Kappil river meets the Arabian Sea, so you can see both the open coast and the calm backwater side from one spot. DTPC Kasaragod notes boat rides on the sea and backwaters, walking trails and local stalls. Agree the price and duration of any boat ride before you step in.
If you are fit, add the Kodi cliff at Kottikulam, close to Kappil. Kerala Tourism describes a trail across open laterite and coastal vegetation, rising to a rocky edge above the Arabian Sea, with a pair of dark rock formations offshore known as Pandiyan Kallu. It is known as a sunset spot, but the footing is rough and the area has little shade, so wear grip shoes.
If the cliff is too much, stay on the beach and watch the light from the sand. Either way, plan to leave before it is fully dark, as evening transport is thin.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Go by car; evening transport is limited
- Agree boat prices and duration in advance
- Wear grip shoes for the cliff
