The short answer
Rajbari National Park: what visitors should know first
Go only if you are happy with an uncertain, low-facility forest visit. Confirm access with the South Tripura forest office first, travel in the dry months, hire a car and expect rough tracks, no cafés and sightings that are never guaranteed.
History and context
The story behind Rajbari National Park
Rajbari National Park was established in 2007, covering an area of about 31.63 square kilometres inside Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, with Belonia as the nearest town. The sanctuary itself was notified in 1988.
The flora includes bamboo, which is abundant and central to the gaur's diet, with many tree, shrub and climber species across several forest types.

Why it matters
Why Rajbari National Park is worth your time
Rajbari, also called Bison National Park, is a small protected core of roughly 31 square kilometres inside the larger Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary. It was created to give the endangered Indian gaur a better-protected habitat, and it is the most direct place in Tripura to hope for a glimpse of this heavy forest cattle.
It matters for a different reason too. Tripura's lowland forests have shrunk under farming, rubber and bamboo plantations, and settlement, and Rajbari is one of the few blocks where mature forest remains. A visit supports the idea that a sanctuary can matter to local travel, and the park also sits in a stretch of the state, close to the border, that few visitors reach.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Gaur country
The park exists for the Indian gaur, a large forest bovine that you will most likely see at the forest edge at first or last light.
- 02
Bamboo forest
Abundant bamboo gives the forest a distinctive look and is a staple food for the gaur.
- 03
Gibbon calls
Hoolock gibbons are heard more often than seen; listen for their calls in the early morning.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat Rajbari as a half-day forest outing, not a drive-through safari. Start from Belonia early, with a hired car and driver, and telephone the forest office the day before to find out whether the area is open, whether a guide or escort is required and where vehicles may go. Tracks inside the sanctuary can be impassable after rain.
The park protects deciduous and semi-evergreen forest with plentiful bamboo, which is a favourite food of the gaur. The animals are shy and are most active at dawn and dusk. Move quietly, keep your distance, and do not leave the vehicle or the marked track unless staff tell you it is safe. Binoculars help; so do patience and a long lens. Gibbons are easier to hear than see, as their calls carry through the canopy in the morning.
Carry water, snacks, insect repellent and a rain layer, because there are no places to buy anything. Plan to be back on the main road before the light fades.
