The short answer

Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Worth it if you like forests and can handle a long, uncertain day. Check opening days with the forest office, hire a car, go between November and February, and expect basic facilities and no guarantee of seeing animals.

History and context

The story behind Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary was notified as a protected area in 1988 and lies in South Tripura. It protects deciduous and semi-evergreen forest, with perennial streams, grasslands and patches of virgin forest.

Rajbari (Bison) National Park, created later in 2007, forms a smaller core within it.

Why it matters

Why Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Trishna is one of Tripura's older protected forests, declared a sanctuary in 1988 and managed as a habitat and species management area. Its area is quoted as about 194.7 square kilometres in some places and 163 square kilometres in others.

For travellers it matters as the best chance in Tripura of seeing gaur in forest, and as one of the few places where hoolock gibbons are found. It is also the quiet counterweight to Pilak's ruins: the same corner of the state, very different atmosphere.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Gaur

The sanctuary's main attraction is the Indian gaur, a very large, dark forest bovine.

  2. 02

    Gibbons and langurs

Hoolock gibbons, golden langurs and capped langurs live in the canopy.

  3. 03

    Streams and grassland

Perennial streams and open grass patches give variety and good birdwatching.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Reach the sanctuary either from Belonia in the south or from Sonamura in the north; most visitors from Belonia take a hired car or taxi. Start early, because the forest is quietest in the first hours after sunrise and you want the return drive finished in daylight. The district page gives hours of 9 am to 5 pm with a weekly closing day, but it dates from 2018, so ring the forest office the day before.

Inside, the habitat includes grassland, streams, water bodies and patches of mature forest. The star animal is the Indian gaur, but the sanctuary is also home to hoolock gibbons, golden and capped langurs, pheasants, deer and many forest birds. Sightings are not guaranteed; a patient morning of listening and slow movement is the best approach.

Take your own water and food, a rain layer in the wet months, and a charged phone. Pair the visit with the national park core at Rajbari if staff say it is accessible.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Phone the forest office to confirm opening day and access
  • Carry food, water and repellent
  • Hire a car and driver for the day
  • Keep to vehicles and tracks
