Belonia is the district headquarters of South Tripura, a small town of about 20,000 people that sits right on the Bangladesh border, at roughly 23 m above sea level. Nobody comes here for the town itself. They come because it is the practical base for the lowland forests and old ruins of Tripura's far south, and because the railway now reaches it.
The main reason to stop is Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, about 18 km away, which shelters a population of Indian gaur along with hoolock gibbons and langurs. Inside it lies the much smaller Rajbari (Bison) National Park. Further out are Pilak, an archaeological site where Buddhist and Hindu sculpture sit side by side, the Mahamuni pagoda near Sabroom, and the Muhuripur temple that houses a goddess image with a long history.
This is a destination for patient travellers, not for ticking boxes. Facilities are modest, public transport thins out in the afternoon, and the forest sights need a hired vehicle and a call to the forest office first. In return you get quiet roads, rubber and bamboo country, a very different Tripura from the palaces of Agartala, and almost no other visitors. Two relaxed days is enough; three if you add Sabroom.
