Betalbatim Beach with elderly parents

Before you go

Betalbatim Beach with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose a stay within a few hundred metres of the beach or with a shuttle; soft sand makes even short walks tiring.
  • Sit in a shack or café with a fixed table and shade, not on a sunbed in direct sun; ask for a regular chair with arms.
  • Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and the flags are green, and keep out of the sea in the monsoon.
  • Plan beach time for early morning and late afternoon, and rest at midday; temperatures stay around 31 to 33 degrees in the dry season.
  • Leave the beach before dusk; local boards advise visitors to leave before about 7:30 pm, and the lanes are poorly lit.
  • Hire a taxi or driver for Margao and Colva and agree the fare in advance; buses are infrequent for the last stretch.

Easiest first

Places in Betalbatim Beach sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (5)

  • Fish Ka Bar & Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours) — A conventional restaurant with indoor tables, so you can sit in the cool and avoid sand. Listings mention air conditioning and wheelchair access, but confirm steps at the entrance before you take a wheelchair.
  • Fisherman's Shack (Food and restaurants · 1 hour) — Mostly a short, level walk from the lane, with simple seating. No parking is listed, so expect to walk or be dropped at the access road.
  • Magzika Beach Shack (Food and restaurants · 1 to 2 hours) — Tables sit at the back of the sand, so expect a short walk over soft sand from the access lane. Ask for a table in shade and a proper chair with arms; sunbeds are low and hard to rise from.
  • Our Lady of Remedies Church, Betalbatim (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — A short, level approach and a church interior with pews, but a few steps at the entrance. It is cooler inside than outside; avoid feast days if you dislike crowds.
  • The Baggie's Cafe (Food and restaurants · 30 to 60 minutes) — Outdoor seating means shade depends on the table you get. Sand underfoot and low seats are the main difficulty for older visitors, so ask for a regular chair near the entrance.

Practical tips for Betalbatim Beach

  • Season. Goa's beach season runs roughly November to March. By May it is hot and humid, and in the monsoon the sea is closed and most shacks are shut.
  • Swimming safety. Swim only in front of lifeguards and obey the flags: red means stay out. During the monsoon, swimming, coastal water sports and fishing are prohibited.
  • Heat. Daytime temperatures sit around 31 to 33 degrees in the dry season, with humidity from March. Beach in the early morning or late afternoon and keep midday for a shaded table or your room.
  • Getting around. The lanes to the beach are walkable, but Colva, Margao and the airport need a taxi, auto or scooter. Agree the fare before you start.
  • After dark. Local boards advise visitors to leave the beach before about 7:30 pm and the lanes are poorly lit. Arrange a taxi back for evening meals.
  • Money. Carry cash for shacks and small restaurants, as card machines can be unreliable. Agree prices for fish by weight before ordering.
  • Dress. Beachwear is fine on the sand, but cover up in the village and wear modest clothing, with shoulders and knees covered, in churches.
  • Shops and medical help. There are few shops near the beach; bring sun cream, medicines and a hat, and note that Margao and Colva have pharmacies and clinics.
