The short answer

Alang Fort: what visitors should know first

Treat it as a serious two-day trek for experienced people with a guide. The climb is long and exposed, and trails can be hard to follow. Casual visitors should admire it from Ambewadi or the Bhandardara hills.

History and context

The story behind Alang Fort

Alang is a hill fort of the Kalsubai range, described in published sources as Maratha-era in its remains. Detailed history is thin; the origins of the three forts are not clearly documented.

Why it matters

Why Alang Fort is worth your time

Alang is the gateway to the best-known fort trek in the Sahyadri. The three forts are shaped by their rock: caves, cut steps, ledges and cisterns carved straight into the hillside rather than raised as masonry. Standing on the plateau you can see how a modest garrison could hold a very strong position with little more than water tanks and a few doors.

For travellers based at Bhandardara, it is also a measure of the region. The lake, the dam and the falls are gentle; Alang is the opposite end of the spectrum, a place for fit groups, and it deserves respect, preparation and a local guide.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Alang is usually the first fort of the traverse. From Ambewadi the trail climbs through forest and then across steep rock traverses, with some sections where the steps drop away to a sheer fall on one side. Trek accounts describe about eight hours to reach the top, so most groups camp overnight in a cave. Go with a local guide, because the route is poorly marked.

The top is a large natural plateau with two caves, a small temple, around eleven water cisterns and remnants of old structures. It is a comfortable place to rest once you arrive, and sunset from the cave mouth is the high point of the trek.

The usual plan continues next day to the ridge below Madan, with a rappel on the descent, and a separate climb to Kulang on a third day. Water crossings and heavy rain make the route risky in the monsoon, so choose the dry season, carry enough food and water, and avoid setting out late.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Hire a local guide; the trail is poorly marked
  • Carry food and water for the full round trip
  • Plan an overnight rather than a rushed day
  • Avoid heavy rain and swollen streams
