Worth it for fit walkers who want a quieter trek than Kalsubai. The climb from Shirpunje takes about an hour and a half one way, with a cave shrine on top. It is too steep and rough for most seniors.

Why it matters

Why Bhairavgad Fort (Shirpunje) is worth your time

Bhairavgad is one of the forest forts that ring the Harishchandragad massif, and its cave shrine shows how these hill sites also work as places of worship for villages below. For trekkers it is a lower-pressure alternative to the busier Kalsubai or Harishchandragad routes.

Note that more than one fort carries the Bhairavgad name in Maharashtra, and even in this part of Ahilyanagar district there is a second Bhairavgad on the Kothale side. Confirm which one your guide means before you set out.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start from Shirpunje, a village in Akole taluka about 27 km from Rajur. Published trek notes put the climb at around an hour and a half one way, rated medium difficulty, through dense forest. Start early, carry water and wear shoes with grip. The village can arrange a guide if you ask ahead.

The summit has two large caves that hold a shrine to Bhairavnath, with a carved and painted idol reported to be in good condition. There are also several water tanks on the hilltop, and one is described as holding drinkable water, though you should still carry your own.

Many trekkers combine the fort with the Ghanchakkar plateau and peak next to it, which makes a long day. Rock-climbing routes have recently been set up by climbing groups, but these are for specialists only. Keep to marked trails, do not light fires and leave no litter inside the sanctuary.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm which Bhairavgad your guide means
  • Carry water and snacks; no shops on the trail
  • Start early to avoid afternoon heat
  • Keep to the trail inside the sanctuary
