The short answer

Harishchandragad: what visitors should know first

For serious trekkers only, and best as an overnight. It is far more than a day outing from Bhandardara. Choose it if you want caves, temples and a cliff-edge view, and not if you have limited mobility.

History and context

The story behind Harishchandragad

Wikipedia says the origin is traced to the 6th century under the Kalachuri dynasty, with caves probably from the 11th century. Saint Changdev is said to have meditated here in the 14th century. The Mughals later controlled the fort, and the Marathas captured it in 1747.

Why it matters

Why Harishchandragad is worth your time

Harishchandragad is one of the Sahyadris' great hill forts, with layers of history from caves and temples to a fort captured by the Marathas. It is also one of the best places in Maharashtra to see a vertical cliff drop like Konkan Kada.

For visitors based at Bhandardara it is a significant undertaking rather than a day trip, but it is part of the same mountain system as Kalsubai and the sanctuary. It rewards those who plan properly.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Trekkers usually choose one of several routes. Wikipedia mentions the Khireshwar route of about 2 to 3 hours across seven hills, the Pachnai route of about 3 km on foot, and a harder route from Belpada. A guide is advised on the harder routes.

On top, the main sights are the Harishchandreshwar temple, a carved stone shrine about 16 m tall, the Kedareshwar cave with a Shiva linga surrounded by ice-cold, waist-deep water, and the west-facing Konkan Kada cliff. Wikipedia warns against walking the rock face in the monsoon, especially at night.

Plan this as an overnight trip and carry food, warm clothes and water. If you are staying at Bhandardara for a family weekend, this is better left to a dedicated trekking trip.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Plan as an overnight trip
  • Use a guide on harder routes
  • Do not walk the rock face in the monsoon
