Plan 01

1 day in Bhimtal

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake, temple and a second lake

Start with a walk along the Bhimtal dam and visit Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple early, when the shore is quiet. Take a boat on the lake, or just sit at the water's edge if you prefer. After lunch in town, drive the short distance to Naukuchiatal for a slow walk along the shore, then stop at the Butterfly Research Centre if it is a weekday and you have time before it closes.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple30 to 45 minutesEasyEarly morning; Mondays and Shivaratri are busier
Naukuchiatal1 to 2 hoursEasyMorning or late afternoon; October to November are clear
Butterfly Research Centre45 to 90 minutesEasyWeekday mornings, when it is open; check first

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Bhimtal

  1. 01

    Day 1: Bhimtal town

Walk the dam and visit Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple in the morning, then go boating. In the afternoon visit the Butterfly Research Centre (closed Sundays) and the Folk Culture Museum, keeping an unhurried lunch between them. Sit by the lake at dusk.

Butterfly Research Centre45 to 90 minutesEasyWeekday mornings, when it is open; check first
Folk Culture Museum (Lok Sanskriti Sangrahalaya)45 to 75 minutesEasyAny day; indoor and useful when it rains

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Naukuchiatal and Sat Tal

Drive to Naukuchiatal early for the shoreline and, in season, a paragliding flight with a licensed operator. Continue to Sat Tal for forest paths, birds and the Christian Ashram, then return via the orchards of Mehragaon. Aim to be back before dark.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Naukuchiatal1 to 2 hoursEasyMorning or late afternoon; October to November are clear
Sat Tal (Seven Lakes)Half a dayModerateEarly morning; March to May and October to November

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Sat Tal (Seven Lakes): Paths are mostly forest tracks that can be uneven and muddy. Viewpoints near the road are easy; longer circuits involve slopes. Bring a stick or a steady companion if balance is an issue.

Plan 03

3 days in Bhimtal

  1. 01

    Day 1: Lake and temple

Spend the day around Bhimtal lake: the dam, Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple, boating and a long lunch. Walk the lakeside road slowly in the evening.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Museums and Naukuchiatal

Morning at the Butterfly Research Centre and the Folk Culture Museum. In the afternoon drive to Naukuchiatal for the shore walk and the light on the water, with paragliding if the weather is clear.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

  3. 03

Day 3: Sat Tal or Kainchi Dham

Choose between a morning at Sat Tal for birds and forest trails, or a day trip via Bhowali to Kainchi Dham, a busy ashram best visited on a weekday. Fit the energetic hill walks, Karkotak or Hidimba Parvat, into a cool early morning only if everyone is comfortable with steep paths.

Pacing

Pacing a Bhimtal trip for parents and children

  • Hire a taxi for the day so you can see the lakes without climbing; the lakeside road and the dam walk are level and enough for many visitors.
  • Karkotak and Hidimba Parvat are steep hill walks. Check trail conditions and consider skipping them if knees or breathing are a worry.
  • Pack warm layers from October to March: nights are cold and the lakes hold the chill.
  • Hill roads from Kathgodam have bends. If anyone gets motion sick, ask the driver to stop at viewpoints and travel in the morning.
  • Keep boating for calm mornings, wear a life jacket and avoid the lake in or after heavy rain.
  • Carry cash and any medication; ATMs and pharmacies are limited outside Bhimtal town.
