Before you go

Bobbili with elderly parents: what to know

  • The fort grounds and temple are largely level, so Bobbili is gentle on older travellers, but facilities such as seating and toilets are not well published.
  • Go in the morning in the cooler months and rest from midday. Summer heat and the October rains are both uncomfortable.
  • Ask permission before entering the palaces and the museum, as parts are used as offices and may not be open to visitors.
  • Hire a car for Gollapalli and Ramatheertham rather than relying on buses, particularly if travelling with parents.
  • Ramatheertham involves hill climbs; older visitors can limit themselves to the Rama temple in the village.
  • Carry cash and water, as small shops may not accept digital payments.

Easiest first

Places in Bobbili sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Bobbili Fort (Places to visit · 1.5 to 2 hours) — The grounds are largely level and the main buildings can be viewed from outside. Stairs lead to the upper-floor museum and seating is not published.
  • Bobbili Veena artisans, Gollapalli (Shopping · 1 hour) — Workshops are small and level, but seating may be limited. Dust and wood shavings can bother some visitors.
  • Venugopala Swamy Temple, Bobbili (Places of worship · 45 to 60 minutes) — Mostly level ground with some steps at mandapas. Footwear is removed, so the stone can be hot at midday.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Ramatheertham (Places to visit · 3 to 4 hours) — The hill remains involve climbs on rock and few published facilities. The Rama temple in the village is an easier option.

Practical tips for Bobbili

  • Start in the morning. The grounds are open and shade is limited. Morning light is also best for photographs.
  • Confirm museum access. Part of the durbar building is used as offices. The museum on the upper floor has no published hours, so ask at the fort.
  • Temple etiquette. Dress modestly at the Venugopala Swamy temple and remove footwear at the entrance.
  • Buying a veena. Ask to see the single-block carving, and confirm price and delivery in writing for full-size instruments.
  • Hire a car. Gollapalli, Vizianagaram and Ramatheertham are easiest by car with driver.
  • Heat and rain. Summers are hot and October is the wettest month; November to February is the best window.
  • Cash and water. Carry cash in small notes and bottled water.
  • Photography. Ask before photographing worshippers, artisans or private buildings.
