Before you go

Candolim Beach with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit the beach early in the morning or in the last hour before sunset; midday sand and sun are hard going.
  • Choose a base with a pool and ground-floor rooms, and use a taxi for the beach if the walk is long.
  • Take advice from Drishti lifesavers before getting in the water and keep to the flagged areas. Swimming and coastal water sports are prohibited in the monsoon.
  • Carry water, a hat and sunscreen, and confirm that a shack is open before walking along the beach.
  • Fort Aguada has vehicle access to the upper fort, but the ramparts are uneven and shaded only in places; go early or late.
  • Cross the main road with care; traffic is heavy and pavements are limited.

Easiest first

Places in Candolim Beach sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (7)

  • After 7 (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Garden seating with generally level ground, though paths may be uneven. The setting is calmer than beach shacks. Ask for a table close to the entrance if walking is slow.
  • Cafe Chocolatti (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — A garden and villa setting with pebbled paths, which can be uneven for walking frames. Seating is plentiful and the atmosphere is quiet. Parking is reported to be available.
  • Calamari Bath & Binge (Food and restaurants · 2 to 3 hours) — Reached over soft sand, with sunbeds for rest and tables with a sea view. Shade is limited at midday. Sand and low seating can be tiring for those with stiff knees.
  • Flambee (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — A main-road restaurant with a conventional seating layout; no steps are reported but confirm. The road outside is busy with taxis and scooters, so take care crossing.
  • Our Lady of Hope Church (Places of worship · 20 to 30 minutes) — The grounds and exterior are mostly level, and a short visit is easy for older travellers. Interior steps and floor levels may vary and seating is the church's own pews, so ask a volunteer if you need help.
  • Vivenda Kafe (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — A small, informal café with simple seating. The main road can be busy with traffic, so take care crossing. Ask for a table that avoids steps if you need one.
  • Water Sports at Sinquerim (Sports · 1 to 2 hours) — Boat and jetty access involves some sand and steps; speedboat rides can be bumpy. Check weight and health restrictions and avoid the activities with a heart condition, bad back or after heavy meals.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Candolim Market (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Mostly open or semi-covered, with uneven floors and crowds at busy hours. Seating is limited and the heat builds by late morning. A companion and a short visit work best.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Candolim Beach

  • Season. Beach shacks are licensed roughly October to May and dismantled before the monsoon. Check that a shack is open, especially at either end of the season.
  • Swimming. Swim only near lifesavers, obey red and green flags and avoid the sea in the monsoon, when swimming and coastal water sports are prohibited.
  • Heat. Daytime highs are above 32 degrees Celsius for most of the season, with humidity rising from March. Visit the sand early or late and carry water and sunscreen.
  • Getting around. Taxis and hired scooters are common. Agree fares first or use a cab app where available, and avoid driving at night if you are unfamiliar with Goan roads.
  • Money. Carry some cash for the market and small shacks, and confirm prices before ordering at beach shacks. Cards are common in cafés and hotels.
  • Beach hawkers. Hawkers sell clothes and trinkets on the sand, and masseurs work the beach. Politely decline or agree prices first.
  • Dress and respect. Beachwear suits the sand, but cover shoulders and knees at Our Lady of Hope Church. Ask before photographing people.
  • Valuables. Keep phones and wallets zipped away in crowds and do not leave belongings unattended on the sand.
