Why it matters

Why Cebu Taoist Temple is worth your time

The Taoist temple was built in 1972 by Cebu's Chinese Filipino community and serves as a centre of worship for Taoism, which follows the teachings of Lao Zi. It sits at an elevation of about 110 metres.

For Indian visitors it is a useful contrast with the Catholic sites that dominate the city, showing the Chinese community's long presence in Cebu. The temple is open to everyone, and its view is a bonus.

How to experience it

Take a taxi or ride-hailing car up to the temple and ask the driver to wait or arrange a pickup. The complex is a multi-coloured, multi-tiered set of buildings reached by three winding routes, with a replica of the Great Wall of China at the entrance.

Inside there is a chapel, a library, a souvenir shop and a wishing well. If you want to make a wish, the custom is to wash your hands, go barefoot into the chapel and drop two wooden blocks. If both land face up, the wish may be made. Otherwise return another time.

The balconies give views of downtown Cebu. Devotees climb 81 steps, which represent the 81 chapters of Taoist scriptures, to light joss sticks and have fortunes read by monks, traditionally on Wednesdays and Sundays. Be respectful, keep quiet and ask before photographing people at prayer.
