Why it matters
Why Heritage of Cebu Monument is worth your time
Eduardo Castrillo designed the tableau with architects Heradio Espanol and Ildefonso P. Santos Jr. Construction began in July 1997 and it was inaugurated on 8 December 2000, with a restoration in 2010.
The subject is Cebu's own telling of its history, including the Battle of Mactan, the baptism of Humabon, Sergio Osmena's inauguration as President of the Philippines and the beatification of Pedro Calungsod. Reading the monument tells you what Cebuanos choose to remember, which is useful context for the sites around it.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Walk around the monument slowly, since it is meant to be seen from every side rather than from one vantage point. The bronze scenes include the Battle of Mactan in 1521, the baptism of Rajah Humabon and his followers, a mass, devotion to the Santo Niño and a Spanish galleon.
A good method is to circle once to take in the whole, then again for detail. It also reproduces the Basilica del Santo Niño, the cathedral, Magellan's Cross and the former Parian church, so it works as a three-dimensional summary of the places you may be about to visit or have just seen.
It sits in the Parian district, close to Casa Gorordo and other old houses, and a guided heritage walk called Pasiyo sa Kabilin passes through. Pair it with Casa Gorordo for a calm hour in the old Chinese-Cebuano quarter.
