Why it matters
Why Mactan Shrine (Lapu-Lapu Monument) is worth your time
The Battle of Mactan in 1521 is where Lapu-Lapu's forces, reported at about 1,500 warriors, defeated a landing party from Magellan's expedition, and Magellan was killed. The shrine commemorates the approximate site.
It was established as a national shrine in 1969 and declared a national shrine again by President Marcos in 1973. Seeing it gives the Filipino side of a story that otherwise gets told through Magellan's cross on the mainland.

How to experience it
Take a taxi to Punta Engano on Mactan Island and walk the park. The 6 metre bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu, erected in 1981, is the centrepiece, with plaques from the National Historical Commission marking the site of his victory and Magellan's death.
A stone obelisk built in 1866 under Spanish rule is dedicated to Ferdinand Magellan, which makes the park an interesting study in two memories of the same event. Read the plaques carefully, since they present the Filipino account of the battle.
On 27 April, Lapulapu Day, arnis practitioners reenact the battle, called Kadaugan sa Mactan, at the shrine. Visiting at another time is quieter. It pairs naturally with a Mactan resort stay or an airport transfer day.
