Plan 01

1 day in Chail

  1. 01

Day 1: Palace, forest and viewpoint

Arrive in the morning and start at Kali ka Tibba, driving as far as the road allows and walking the last part for the Choor Chandni views. Return to town for tea in the bazaar, then visit Gurudwara Sahib on Pandhawa hill and take a langar meal if offered. After a rest, spend the late afternoon at Chail Palace, either as a guest or for tea on the lawn if the hotel allows non-guests. Leave before dark because the hill roads are winding.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kali ka Tibba2–3 hours including the walk or driveModerateEarly morning and clear days; October to November for the best visibility
Chail Palace (The Palace, Chail)2–3 hours for a visit; 1–2 nights to stayEasyMorning or late afternoon on clear days; September to November for calm weather and fewer crowds

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kali ka Tibba: The walk is long but mostly gentle; a vehicle can reduce it. The last stretch involves steps and uneven ground. There are few places to sit en route, and the summit is exposed and windy. Carry a jacket, water and walking shoes.

Plan 02

2 days in Chail

  1. 01

    Day 1: Viewpoint and forest

Start early for Kali ka Tibba and, if you are fit, the forest walk through the sanctuary at first light. Return for breakfast, rest through midday and visit the bazaar and the gurudwara in the late afternoon.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Palace and history

Spend the morning at Chail Palace and its lawns. Ask whether visitors are currently allowed at the cricket ground and Sidh Baba ka Mandir, and visit them if so. On the way down, stop at Sadhupul for a meal beside the stream, or turn towards Shimla via Kufri.

Sadhupul45–90 minutesEasyDry months; avoid after heavy rain or during monsoon floods
Kufri1–3 hoursModerateEarly morning; December to February for snow, otherwise spring and autumn

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Sidh Baba ka Mandir: The shrine lies uphill from the road and may involve a short climb with uneven ground. There is little seating and no shade. Not ideal for anyone with knee trouble unless the road allows you to get close by car.

With parents at Kufri: Paths around the park and viewpoints are uneven and often crowded. Horse rides can reduce walking, but check safety and agree the rate first. Parking and queues can be tiring in peak season.

Plan 03

3 days in Chail

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive and settle

Reach Chail by early afternoon, check in, and spend the evening on the palace lawn or a short walk through the bazaar. Keep the first day light as the climb and altitude can tire older travellers.

  2. 02

Day 2: Kali ka Tibba and the sanctuary

Make an early walk or drive to Kali ka Tibba, scanning for birds and deer in the sanctuary. After a long lunch and rest, visit Gurudwara Sahib and Sidh Baba ka Mandir if access allows.

    Day 3: A slow exit

Take a last forest walk or visit the cricket ground if permitted. Drive down via Sadhupul and Kandaghat, or loop towards Kufri and Shimla for a longer stay there.

Pacing

Pacing a Chail trip for parents and children

  • Plan one main outing a day; Chail is small but the roads are steep and the altitude is about 2,250 m.
  • Choose a hotel with heating, a ground-floor room and parking close to the entrance, as nights are cold even in summer.
  • Drive to Kali ka Tibba instead of walking the full 6 km, and walk only the last stretch if comfortable.
  • Do the winding drive from Kandaghat or Shimla in daylight, and carry travel sickness tablets if you are prone.
  • Carry regular medicines, a warm jacket and cash, since the nearest hospitals are in Solan and Shimla.
  • Keep food out of sight around the palace and temples; monkeys can be aggressive.
