Before you go

Chail with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan one main outing a day; Chail is small but the roads are steep and the altitude is about 2,250 m.
  • Choose a hotel with heating, a ground-floor room and parking close to the entrance, as nights are cold even in summer.
  • Drive to Kali ka Tibba instead of walking the full 6 km, and walk only the last stretch if comfortable.
  • Do the winding drive from Kandaghat or Shimla in daylight, and carry travel sickness tablets if you are prone.
  • Carry regular medicines, a warm jacket and cash, since the nearest hospitals are in Solan and Shimla.
  • Keep food out of sight around the palace and temples; monkeys can be aggressive.

Easiest first

Places in Chail sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (4)

  • Chail Bazaar (Shopping · 45–90 minutes) — The bazaar is compact and mostly flat, with a short stretch along the main road. Traffic is light, but surfaces can be uneven. Benches are few, so use tea stalls to rest.
  • Chail Cricket Ground (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes if you can enter) — The ground is flat and open, but reaching it can involve a drive along narrow hill roads. There is little seating on the field and no shade, so carry a jacket and water.
  • Chail Palace (The Palace, Chail) (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for a visit; 1–2 nights to stay) — The grounds are broad and mostly gentle, with lawns, terraces and benches. Rooms in the older palace block may involve steps, so ask about ground-floor rooms and parking distance before booking. At 2,200 m the nights are cold, so check heating.
  • Sadhupul (Places to visit · 45–90 minutes) — Most seating is close to the road, but approaches to riverside tables can include steps. Keep a close watch on children and older travellers near the water, and avoid the area in heavy rain.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Chail Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2–4 hours for a walk) — Trails are uneven and mostly unpaved, with few benches. The sanctuary is better for fit seniors who can walk slowly for an hour or two. Others can enjoy it by car along the main roads.
  • Gurudwara Sahib Chail (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes) — The approach climbs uphill from the bazaar, and the road is steep in places. Going by car shortens it, though there are likely to be steps at the entrance. Seating inside is on the floor, so ask if a chair can be arranged.
  • Kali ka Tibba (Places of worship · 2–3 hours including the walk or drive) — The walk is long but mostly gentle; a vehicle can reduce it. The last stretch involves steps and uneven ground. There are few places to sit en route, and the summit is exposed and windy. Carry a jacket, water and walking shoes.
  • Sidh Baba ka Mandir (Places of worship · 30 minutes) — The shrine lies uphill from the road and may involve a short climb with uneven ground. There is little seating and no shade. Not ideal for anyone with knee trouble unless the road allows you to get close by car.

Practical tips for Chail

  • Altitude and cold. Chail is at about 2,250 m, and nights are cold even in late spring. Carry layers, and check that your room has heating.
  • Road conditions. Hill roads are winding and can be affected by snow in winter and landslides in July and August. Check conditions and drive in daylight.
  • Getting around. Hire a car or taxi for the Kali ka Tibba road and the palace area; the bazaar is walkable.
  • Money. Carry enough cash since card machines and ATMs may be limited in a small hill town.
  • Restricted areas. The cricket ground and Sidh Baba ka Mandir lie in a military area. Ask about access and carry photo ID.
  • Monkeys. Monkeys are common around the palace and temples. Keep food out of sight and do not feed them.
  • Worship etiquette. Cover your head and remove shoes at the gurudwara and temples, and ask before photographing.
  • Booking. Book the palace and other hotels early for weekends, May, June and snow season.
