The short answer

Lakhari Valley Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Go if you enjoy forest edges, birdsong and empty trails and can accept that large mammals are rarely seen. Call or visit the Chandragiri forest office first, because permission, guides and any fees are not published online.

History and context

The story behind Lakhari Valley Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary was established in 1985. It is administered as a single forest range, with sections named Chandragiri, Chandiput and Bhismagiri and its headquarters at Podamari.

Sources disagree on the exact area (118 sq km is the figure most often repeated) and some place it in neighbouring Ganjam district, so check the notified boundary and the controlling forest division before planning a long visit.

Why it matters

Why Lakhari Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Lakhari Valley is one of the smaller protected areas of Odisha's Eastern Ghats, notified in 1985 and described in most sources as about 118 square kilometres, although a few sources give larger figures. It protects sal and mixed moist deciduous forest on the folded hills of Gajapati district, a landscape that most visitors drive past on the way to Taptapani or Mahendragiri.

Its value to a traveller is partly the quiet. Few people come here, the forest office is in a working hill settlement and the nearest comforts are the monastery town a few kilometres away. That makes it a good place to see how the Ghats look away from the coastal plain, and a useful reminder that protected does not always mean prepared for tourists.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The Chandragiri gate

The forest office on the highway is the practical start of any visit, and the staff there are your best source of current track and access advice.

  2. 02

    The birding trail

A route through Talabanda, Kamrakhali and Baliganda towards Manikpur is described as the valley's birdwatching line; go early and take binoculars.

  3. 03

    Forest and village edges

Sal forest, hill farms and tribal hamlets sit side by side here, so even a short drive shows how the Ghats are lived in.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Lakhari as a forest outing built around Chandragiri rather than a safari. The sanctuary is entered from the hamlet of Chandragiri, where a forest office sits on the state highway. Stop there first, say what you hope to do, and ask which tracks are open and whether a forest guard can accompany you. Do not drive in unannounced; there are no ticket counters or signboards you can count on.

The sanctuary is managed as a single range made up of the Chandragiri, Chandiput and Bhismagiri sections, with its headquarters at Podamari. A birdwatching route is described through the valley by way of Talabanda, Kamrakhali and Baliganda to Manikpur. Go at first light, carry water and binoculars, and plan to be back on a main road well before dusk. Hill roads are narrow and phone coverage can drop away.

Set your expectations honestly. Accounts mention leopard, elephant and sambar in the area, but villagers near the gate have also said that significant wildlife is rarely seen in the Chandragiri range. Birds, butterflies, forest light and the hill villages on the way are the realistic rewards. Combine the morning here with the Tibetan monastery in the afternoon.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Visit the Chandragiri forest office before entering and ask about current access
  • Book the forest rest house through the forest department well ahead
  • Start at first light and leave the forest before dusk
  • Carry water, snacks and a torch; there are no shops inside
  • Do not rely on seeing elephants or leopards
