Why it matters

Why Taptapani Hot Spring is worth your time

Taptapani is the most comfortable overnight base within reach of Chandragiri, since the settlement has no hotels. Odisha Tourism runs a lodge with hot water piped to room bathrooms, and the spring itself is a gentle, relaxing stop after the long drive from the coast.

It also shows a different side of the Ghats: hot sulphur water at about 430 metres above sea level, surrounded by forest. Few visitors combine a spa-like stop with a Tibetan monastery day, which is why this pairing works well for families and older travellers.

How to experience it

Taptapani lies on the state highway that links Berhampur to western Odisha, in a forested valley. The name comes from the Odia for hot water, and the spring is known for a perennial flow of sulphur-rich water that people bathe in for its reputed medicinal effects. A small temple stands by the spring and a forest-department deer park is close by.

Visit in the morning or at dusk. Bathe only where the water is marked as safe, because the source is very hot, and avoid immersing if you have heart or blood-pressure conditions without medical advice. Tribal dance and music are sometimes mentioned as part of the surroundings, but treat this as occasional rather than scheduled.

From Taptapani, Chandragiri is about 26 km along a narrow, winding road that passes forests, tribal hamlets and fruit orchards. Leave early so you reach the monastery for morning prayers and return before dark.

  • Book the Odisha Tourism lodge in advance
