The short answer
Mahendragiri: what visitors should know first
Only worth it if you have a full free day and a reliable driver. The summit road is motorable and the temples are quiet, but distances are long, facilities are minimal and Shivaratri brings crowds.
History and context
The story behind Mahendragiri
The Mahabharata describes the Pandavas visiting Mount Mahendra and meeting Parashurama there, and local tradition ties the stone temples on the hill to that episode.
A biosphere reserve was recommended by an expert committee in 2014, covering about 4,715 square kilometres with a core of about 42.5 square kilometres, but sources do not confirm a formal declaration.

Why it matters
Why Mahendragiri is worth your time
Mahendragiri is the highest point of Gajapati district at about 1,501 metres and is described as Odisha's second-highest motorable mountain. Traditions place the Pandavas here during their exile and link the hill with Parashurama, which makes it a pilgrimage site as well as a viewpoint.
It is also considered a biodiversity hotspot, with more than 600 flowering plants recorded and a proposal for a biosphere reserve. Few visitors reach it, so the setting is quieter and wilder than most hill sites in the state.

How to experience it
Mahendragiri is a separate outing from Chandragiri, not a quick add-on. Chandragiri is about 88 km from Paralakhemundi, and the hill is reported about 40 to 50 km beyond that town, so allow a long day with an early start. Hire a car and driver with hill-road experience, and check conditions at Paralakhemundi before climbing.
The hill is reached by a motorable road, with other access routes from Tumba on the Berhampur side and Jangalapadu from the Srikakulam side. At the top are old stone temples that tradition links to the Pandavas, including a shrine known as the Bhima temple, as well as shrines to Shiva and Parashurama. The views over the Eastern Ghats are the main reward.
Take water and food, because there are few facilities. Shivaratri is the major festival and draws pilgrims in large numbers, so choose another week if you want quiet.
