Day 1: Temple morning, mangrove afternoon
Reach the Thillai Nataraja Temple soon after it opens and walk the outer courtyard first, looking at the east gopuram's dance carvings and the Sivaganga tank, before queuing for the Chit Sabha. Leave before the midday closure and have lunch with Chidambaram gotsu if a restaurant serves it. Rest, then drive about 15 km to Pichavaram for a late-afternoon boat ride through the mangroves. Come back for the evening puja at the temple if you have the energy, or visit the Thillai Kali temple on the way.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Chidambaram trip for parents and children
- Visit the Nataraja temple early in the morning or in the evening. The temple closes through the middle of the day, and the stone floors get very hot before late afternoon.
- Wear socks or carry a cotton mat if bare feet on stone are a problem; footwear must be left outside. Ask at the entrance where to leave shoes.
- Do not try to see everything in one go. The complex is large, and the Chit Sabha queue can take time. Choose the sanctum, the gopurams and the tank, and leave the rest.
- Hire a car for Pichavaram and the day trips. Pichavaram boats need a short walk and a step into a boat; confirm with the boat operator that you will be assisted.
- Avoid October to December if you can. The northeast monsoon brings heavy rain and the risk of cyclone disruption on this coast, and festival days in December and January are very crowded.
- Carry water, a hat and any regular medication; there are few quiet places to sit inside the temple, so ask a guide for rest spots.
