Why it matters
Why Chandravalli Caves and Archaeological Site is worth your time
Chandravalli fills in the history before the fort. A rock inscription of Mayurasharma, founder of the Kadamba dynasty, dated to 345 CE was found here, and the site is linked to the Kadambas' early rule.
The finds show a settlement with trade contacts across a long span. A visit makes the point that Chitradurga's story begins long before the Nayakas. Allow time to sit quietly, look closely at the surroundings and read the landscape, because the value of this stop is atmosphere and context more than any single object, and it fits easily into a slow day.

How to experience it
Drive the short distance from town and start at the cave temple, also called the Ankali Mutt. It is a semilunar cave between two large rocks, named after saints from Ankalagi who meditated there. Walk the path with care.
The wider site is a valley between the Chitradurga, Kirabanakallu and Jolagudda hills, with a stream and a lake nearby. Excavations here found brick-walled houses, drains and fireplaces, pottery and coins, including Satavahana pieces and a few Roman denarii, which suggest trade links. Not much is visible on the ground, so read the setting rather than expect displays.
The lake and scrub forest make a pleasant place for a late-afternoon walk and for birds. Bring water and keep to the paths.
