Why it matters
Why Jogimatti Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Jogimatti gives Chitradurga a cooler, greener complement to the fort. As the district's highest point, it was tiger habitat until the 1950s, and its dry forest and scrub still shelter leopards and many birds.
It is also a reminder of the pressures on dryland wildlife in this region, from farmland and windmills to mining. A respectful visit supports the case for protecting a landscape that often goes unnoticed. Allow time to sit quietly, look closely at the surroundings and read the landscape, because the value of this stop is atmosphere and context more than any single object, and it fits easily into a slow day.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Hire a car in Chitradurga and drive about 10 km south, going up in the early morning or late afternoon. At around 1,159 metres, Jogimatti is the highest point in the district and noticeably cooler than the town, with open views over the dry plain and the windmills on the ridges.
The sanctuary covers about 100 square kilometres of grassland and dry forest. Its mammals are shy, with leopards, wolves, jackals and porcupines recorded, and sloth bears now rare. Birds are the likelier reward. A century-old British-era hilltop bungalow stands on the hill, and an ecotourism adventure centre opened in 2010.
On the hill you can also see a temple reached by 155 steps and the Himavatkedara waterfall, which forms a natural cave holding a Shiva lingam. Carry water, wear grip shoes and stay on paths.
