Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Colombo trip for parents and children
- Do outdoor sights before 10 am; afternoons are hot and humid, and the weather is warm all year.
- Gangaramaya, Seema Malaka and Jami Ul-Alfar involve bare feet on stone; check the surface temperature and footing before committing.
- Pettah is the hardest stop: narrow, crowded lanes with uneven surfaces. Use a car, a short route and a guide, or skip it.
- The National Museum, Dutch Hospital precinct and Viharamahadevi Park offer shade, seating and air-conditioning; use them as rest stops.
- Carry travel insurance and a list of medicines; private hospitals such as Durdans (Colombo 3) and Nawaloka (Colombo 2) are central, but confirm what your policy covers.
- Hotel-arranged cars with drivers are more comfortable than tuk-tuks for older travellers in traffic and heat.
