Plan 01

1 day in Cooch Behar

  1. 01

Day 1: Palace, lake and temple

Start at Cooch Behar Palace in the morning, giving it about two hours including the Durbar Hall and the back grounds. Walk or take a toto to Sagardighi for a short lakeside stroll and tea, then visit the Madan Mohan temple before lunch. After a rest, spend the late afternoon at the Railway Heritage Museum next to the old station if it is open, and return to the lake or the temple in the evening.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Cooch Behar Palace1.5 to 2 hours, plus time for the groundsModerateMorning in November to February, when the light on the red brick is soft and the walk around the building is comfortable
Sagardighi30 to 60 minutesEasyEarly morning or evening; November to February for migratory birds
Madan Mohan Temple45 to 60 minutesEasyEarly morning or late afternoon; the Rash Mela season (November to December) is atmospheric but very crowded

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Cooch Behar Palace: The ground floor is level and verandahs are shaded, but the building is large and there are stairs to the upper floor with limited seating. Older visitors can enjoy the exterior and ground-floor halls and skip the upstairs rooms. Carry water; there is little shade in the open grounds.

Go to Baneswar Shiva Temple in the morning to see the sunken sanctum and the sacred turtle pond, about 10 km from town. Continue by car to Gosanimari for Kamteswari Temple and the Rajpat ruins, allowing a long lunch break on the way. Return to town by late afternoon.

Pacing

Pacing a Cooch Behar trip for parents and children

  • Plan one main sight in the morning and rest after lunch; the town is easy but the sun is strong outside winter.
  • The palace, the lake and the temple are mostly level. Expect stairs upstairs in the palace and at some temple entrances.
  • Baneswar's sanctum is reached down steps, and Kamteswari and Rajpat involve uneven ground; take your time and choose the lower paths.
  • Use a toto or taxi between sights rather than walking in the midday sun.
  • For day trips, carry water, snacks and any medicines, since facilities near Baneswar, Gosanimari and Rasikbil are basic.
  • Avoid the Rash Mela's peak weekend evenings if crowds are difficult; weekdays and early evenings are easier.
