Before you go

Cooch Behar with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan one main sight in the morning and rest after lunch; the town is easy but the sun is strong outside winter.
  • The palace, the lake and the temple are mostly level. Expect stairs upstairs in the palace and at some temple entrances.
  • Baneswar's sanctum is reached down steps, and Kamteswari and Rajpat involve uneven ground; take your time and choose the lower paths.
  • Use a toto or taxi between sights rather than walking in the midday sun.
  • For day trips, carry water, snacks and any medicines, since facilities near Baneswar, Gosanimari and Rasikbil are basic.
  • Avoid the Rash Mela's peak weekend evenings if crowds are difficult; weekdays and early evenings are easier.

Easiest first

Places in Cooch Behar sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (6)

  • Baneswar Shiva Temple (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours, plus travel) — The temple platform and compound are level, but reaching the sanctum means going down steps to a chamber well below ground, which can be awkward for stiff knees. Floors are bare-foot and can be cold or hot. The pond edge has little seating.
  • Cooch Behar Railway Heritage Museum (Places to visit · 45 to 60 minutes) — The galleries and garden are on level ground and the visit is short. Seating is limited and the garden has little shade, so choose the late afternoon and carry water.
  • Kamteswari Temple, Gosanimari (Places of worship · 1 hour at the temple; half a day with travel) — The temple compound is mostly level, but facilities such as seating, toilets and shade are basic, and the journey from town is longer than for the in-town sights. Take water and plan comfort stops on the road.
  • Madan Mohan Temple (Places of worship · 45 to 60 minutes) — The lawns and paths are level and the temple precinct is compact. Shoes come off at the shrines, so wear socks or choose a time when the ground is cool, and expect steps at the main entrances. Crowds thicken sharply during festival days.
  • Rasikbil Wetland (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours at the site, plus a long drive each way) — Paths around the lake and animal enclosures are mostly flat, but the drive is long and facilities are basic. Carry water, snacks and sun protection, and plan a rest stop on the way.
  • Sagardighi (Places to visit · 30 to 60 minutes) — The walkway around the water is flat and can be done in sections, with several places to stop. Seating is limited and there is little shade at midday. Choose the cooler hours and keep to the busier stretch after dark.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Cooch Behar Palace (Places to visit · 1.5 to 2 hours, plus time for the grounds) — The ground floor is level and verandahs are shaded, but the building is large and there are stairs to the upper floor with limited seating. Older visitors can enjoy the exterior and ground-floor halls and skip the upstairs rooms. Carry water; there is little shade in the open grounds.
  • Cooch Behar Rash Mela (Culture and craft · 2 to 3 hours in the evening) — The ground is large and busy, with uneven surfaces in places and few seats. Visit early on a weekday, keep a companion close, and use the temple for quieter moments. Evenings can be cold in December, so carry a shawl.
  • Gosanimari Rajpat Ruins (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The mound and grassy ground are uneven, with little shade and few seats. Older visitors can enjoy the view from the lower paths and the artefact gallery. Wear sturdy shoes and carry water.

Practical tips for Cooch Behar

  • Season. November to February is the comfortable window. From June to September the rain is very heavy and roads and rivers can flood; avoid planning day trips then.
  • Getting around. Totos and rickshaws are the usual choice in town, and fares should be agreed in advance. For Baneswar, Gosanimari and Rasikbil, hire a car and driver.
  • Flights. Cooch Behar Airport has had only limited, intermittent services. Check the airline's current schedule, and keep Bagdogra and a train as back-ups.
  • Museum closing days. The palace museum has been reported closed on Fridays and the railway museum on Tuesdays. Confirm days and hours locally before building a plan around them.
  • Temple etiquette. Dress modestly, expect to remove footwear, and ask before photographing inside shrines. At Baneswar, do not touch or feed the sacred turtles.
  • Rash Mela. The fair runs for roughly 15 to 20 days around Rash Purnima in November or December. Book rooms early and visit early in the evening to avoid the densest crowds.
  • Day-trip comfort. Facilities near Baneswar, Gosanimari and Rasikbil are basic. Carry water, snacks, sun protection and any medicines.
  • Money. Carry some cash for small shops, totos and stalls, and use cards or UPI where accepted. Check the nearest bank or ATM before leaving town for a day trip.
