Damoh is a small district town on the railway between Bina and Katni, roughly midway between Sagar and Jabalpur. It is not a place most itineraries reach, and it has little in the way of polished tourism. What it offers is a quiet base, a handful of shrines and ruins, and a stretch of forest country that was once the heartland of the Gond kingdom of Garha.
The story visitors follow here is that of Rani Durgavati. She lived at Singorgarh in 1564 when Mughal forces invaded, and the town of Singrampur is linked to her final battle. Singorgarh, a ruined hill fort protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, is the district's main historical stop. Near it, the Nidan waterfall falls over 30 metres between black rock walls in the monsoon, and the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, formed around the old Nauradehi sanctuary, spreads across Damoh, Sagar and Narsinghpur districts.
The temples are the other draw. Kundalpur, north-east of the town, is a major Digambar Jain pilgrimage site with the 15-foot seated Bade Baba statue. Closer in, there are Shiva shrines at Jatashankar, Bandakpur and Nohta. Damoh suits patient travellers with a car and driver, ready to accept basic facilities, and works well as a two-day stop between Sagar and Jabalpur.
